He’s gotten behind the wheel of all sorts of interesting vehicles for the Gymkhana series, but the seventh installment has him wrestling with a highly modified 1965 Ford Mustang, which is called the Hoonicorn. Actually, saying the muscle car is “highly modified” is a big understatement. It took two years to customize the Mustang, which is at first glance unrecognizable. The work was done at ASD Motorsports, which is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Creating the monster was a labor of love that brought Block together with RTR, which is Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s tuning brand that has become famous for aggressive Mustang customizations.
Block actually took Chris Harris, the famous automotive journalist, for a spin in his Ford Hoonicorn. The video of that ride shows Harris, who wasn’t wearing a helmet by the way, looking visibly concerned about the car’s raw acceleration and ability to pull through turns with extreme force. Lest anyone think that Harris was just acting, car enthusiasts should know that the muscle car houses a 410 cubic inch Roush Yates V8 engine under the hood, kicking out a healthy 845 horsepower and 720 lb.-ft. of torque. It also produces a screaming exhaust note that will haunt you in your dreams. The power is applied to all four wheels, because Block had the car converted into all-wheel drive.
To some, converting a 1965 Ford Mustang in to an all-wheel drive vehicle of terror is blasphemy, while others call it pure genius. The amazing feat was made possible using a custom Sadev all-wheel drive system. Block makes the Mustang do four-wheel donuts around the iconic Randy’s Donuts in Los Angeles. Can it get any better than that? Of course, there are also a number of race-inspired modifications that help Block handle all of the power that the Roush Yates pushes out. The transmission is a custom configuration that was designed by ASD Motorsports. As for the wheels, they are fifteen52 three-piece R40, 18″ x 10.5″ and are wrapped with Pirelli Trofeo R, 295/30/18 tires made of a custom compound Block helped specify.
The main reason why the car looks so different from other 1965 notchback Mustangs is that it features a custom widebody that was created by RTR and Ken Block. The body panels were designed by RTR and are made of carbon fiber. The bulging fender flares, aggressive front splitter, side-exit exhaust, and huge rear diffuser top off the extreme look. Under the skin is a full tubular chassis that was created by ASD Motorsports, plus a custom roll-cage that the shop also custom fabricated. ASD also created custom front and rear suspension mounts and door bars, just in case.
While Block might be an amazing auto racer, he’s also smart enough to know when he needs the expertise of others. He said that the Hoonicorn turned out to be so incredibly potent thanks to Vaughn Gittin Jr. and RTR’s extensive experience with Mustangs. Block went so far as to say that the Mustang is the best Gymkhana vehicle he has driven, and many people are likely to agree.
